The Troy women’s tennis team started its spring season with a close match against the University of North Florida (UNF) in Jacksonville, Florida. The Trojans lost 4-3 but saw strong performances from several players.
Troy fell behind early after losing the doubles point. In singles play, Valeriia Avdeeva was the first to secure a win for Troy, defeating Aryana Barlett in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Leena Metwally followed with another straight set victory over May Fadida, winning both sets 6-4.
Maria Guirguis contributed Troy’s third singles victory after a three-set match against Laurie Barendse of UNF. Barendse won the first set 7-6 before Guirguis came back to take the next two sets 6-3 and 7-5.
Other singles matches included Alexia Zarate falling to Gabby Goyins 6-1, 6-0; Hiba Heni losing to Anslee Long in three sets; and Sama Hindawy being defeated by Jasmin Makela.
Troy will look to improve on this performance when they face Stetson on Sunday morning at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
