The Troy softball team lost 2-1 to Texas State on April 12 in a closely contested matchup. The Trojans, now with a record of 25-17 overall and 5-10 in the Sun Belt Conference, were limited by strong pitching from Texas State’s Madison Azua and Emma Strood.
The game was marked by strong defensive efforts and pitching performances on both sides. Kiley Huffman led Troy at the plate, finishing with two hits out of three at-bats, while Mia Tidmore recorded her eleventh multi-hit game of the season with three hits. Huffman also contributed defensively with an outfield assist that stopped a Bobcat runner from advancing to second base.
Mya Holt drove in Troy’s only run and pitched four innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run on five hits. Abby Lovell started for Troy, giving up one run over three innings. Head Coach Eric Newell said after the game: “It was a good game, but we weren’t on the good side of it. It was a really good pitcher’s duel. I liked what I saw out of Abby and loved what I saw from Mya – those were some of the best innings she’s thrown this year, and she held a very good Texas State team down. The difference in that game is just a couple bloop hits after a walk in the fourth. It was such a razor-thin difference, and that’s the encouraging thing that we’re going to tell the team in the huddle. Although we didn’t win a game in the series, we were incredibly close.”
Kalee Rochinski made history for Troy by catching a runner stealing for her fourth consecutive game—the first time this has been recorded since at least 2013 for any Trojan catcher.
Other notable achievements included Makaley Boswell extending her hitting streak to eight games; Huffman notching her thirteenth multi-hit performance this season; Holt logging her seventh career run batted in (RBI) and second this season; and Tidmore recording another multi-hit outing.
Despite coming up short against Texas State—against whom they are now 13-27-1 all-time—the Trojans look ahead encouraged by their competitive play.
