Troy University’s baseball team won 12-2 against Florida A&M on April 8, ending its five-game homestand at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy, Alabama. The game concluded after seven innings due to the run-rule.
The victory is notable as it improves Troy’s record to 16-17 and extends their winning streak over Florida A&M to eight games. The Trojans now lead the all-time series with the Rattlers 40-6.
Troy’s offense produced nine hits and drew a total of fifteen free passes, including twelve walks and three hit-by-pitches from seven different Florida A&M pitchers. The Trojans scored four runs in the first inning, added five more in the fourth, two in the sixth, and ended with a bases-loaded walk by Steven Meier in the seventh inning.
Catcher Jimmy Janicki contributed two doubles and three RBIs. Starting pitcher Drew Nelson threw three perfect innings with three strikeouts before adding another RBI performance at bat for his second career three-RBI game. “Any time you can help the team win you feel good about yourself, so it was good to do,” Nelson said.
Head Coach Skylar Meade commented on his team’s approach: “I thought we did what we needed to do. We’re going to play to win every inning. We will never apologize for doing that. We were going to play hard, take what the game gives us, and when it gives us stuff, we’re going to take it. I think the guys came out ready. Drew Nelson set the tone, just being a strikezone assaulter.” Janicki also praised his teammates: “Everybody did a great job setting the tone. Four runs in the first. Great job all around.”
Other highlights include Josh Pyne hitting his eleventh double of this season—his sixty-ninth career double—which leads all active Division-I players—and extending his hitting streak to six games; Blake Cavill reaching base four times and continuing a twenty-two-game reached-base streak; while Janicki’s thirty-eight RBIs rank fourth in Sun Belt Conference statistics.
Looking ahead, Troy will travel for a three-game series against Texas State beginning Friday.
