Troy right-handed pitcher Tommy Egan was named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List on March 11, according to an announcement by the College Baseball Foundation. The recognition comes after a strong start to his senior season with the Trojans.
The honor highlights Egan’s performance as he has become a key player for Troy’s baseball team. His contributions are seen as important as the team prepares for conference play in the coming weeks.
Head coach Skylar Meade said, “Tommy has been very solid to start the year and is going to be asked to continue to do that as we embark on phase two of our season in conference play. Glad Tommy is here in Troy, and hopefully he can leave quite the mark over the next three months.”
Egan transferred from Illinois-Chicago, where he earned All-Missouri Valley Conference Honorable Mention honors during his redshirt junior season, posting a 4.76 earned run average across nine starts. Since joining Troy, he has improved his numbers significantly, anchoring the Friday night role with a 2.25 ERA over four starts and striking out 27 batters while walking only six in 20 innings pitched.
In his most recent outing against Maryland, Egan threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk in a game that ended with a 5-2 win for Troy. Two weeks earlier, he set a career high with nine strikeouts over five shutout innings against Campbell.
Egan and his teammates will begin Sun Belt Conference play at Riddle-Pace Field this weekend with a three-game series against Old Dominion.
