There were nine businesses registered in cities across Houston County during February

There were nine businesses that registered in cities within Houston County during February, according to the Alabama Secretary of State.

This is 36 percent less than the month before, when 14 businesses were registered.

Columbia registered the most businesses in Houston County.

More than 99 percent of Alabama's businesses are considered small, with more than 47 percent of Alabama's employees working for a small business, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

A Civic Economics study found $100 spent at a locally-owned business puts $47 back into the local economy while the total is just $13 for non-local businesses.
