Eight businesses registered in two cities found within Pike County in the week ending Jan. 28

There were eight businesses that registered in cities within Pike County in the week ending Jan. 28, according to the Alabama Secretary of State.

This is 60 percent more than the week before, when five businesses were registered.

Troy registered the most businesses in Pike County.

More than 99 percent of Alabama's businesses are considered small, with more than 47 percent of Alabama's employees working for a small business, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

A Civic Economics study found $100 spent at a locally-owned business puts $47 back into the local economy while the total is just $13 for non-local businesses.
