Where does your peanut butter come from?
Wade Helms of Slocomb, Alabama is a third-generation farmer with over 350 acres of family-owned farmland. Though he considers himself a peanut farmer, Helms also grows cotton, corn, and oats, and manages black Angus cattle. “I would only grow peanuts if I could,” says Helms. However, other crops are necessary to keep the soil healthy.
Helms noted that he had an above-average year with good yields but still managed to spend more money than ever to grow his crop. This rings true for many farmers across the state.
Helms's favorite way to enjoy his harvest is with a peanut butter cake baked by his mom! We are thankful for farmers like these who put seeds in the ground so that we can have jars in our pantries. Happy National Peanut Butter Lovers Month!
