John Hyde, Information Technology Specialist II at the Montgomery Campus, has won Troy University’s Vergil Parks McKinley Award.

Hyde, who has been a member of the TROY staff since 2015, received the award from Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, on July 27 during a ceremony in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on the Troy Campus. He was nominated by Dr. Laura Hodges, Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling, Rehabilitation and Interpreter Training.

The McKinley Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented quarterly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by the late John McKinley, former Texaco CEO, in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a Troy University professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the University’s athletic program. Winners of this award receive an engraved clock and a $1,000 stipend.

In her nomination, Dr. Hodges commended Hyde for his customer service skills and his ‘can do’ attitude.

“John truly has a servant’s heart, exemplified by his excellent customer service and his ‘can do’ attitude when it comes to what seems to be insurmountable problems or issues with computers on campus,” Dr. Hodges said. “No matter how big or small the problem is, John answers the call and is ready to troubleshoot, tackle and resolve the issue. His even-tempered attitude and his problem-solving skills provide assurance to faculty and staff that he is the correct individual with the correct skill set to take care of business. As faculty, we could not do what we do without John’s dedication to assist and support us. He is truly a model for others to emulate.”

Hyde said he was extremely grateful and honored to receive the award.

“It is always rewarding to be recognized for the work that you do and I’m grateful to receive this award,” Hyde said.
