Troy University’s IDEA Bank is teaming with the Central Alabama Community Foundation to offer a free workshop on non-profit organization start-ups.
“The Nonprofit Summit is going to be a great opportunity for existing and aspiring non-profit owners or affiliates to get together for networking and learning,” said Lynne Firmin George, the IDEA Bank’s director.
The seminar is from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 at the IDEA Bank on the Square in downtown Troy. It includes sessions on social media development, board of directors development, networking and a grant-writing session. Lunch is provided.
“I am excited that the Central Alabama Community Foundation was willing to partner with us on this unique program to bring their expertise to our community,” said George.
Kicking off the seminar will be a Michael Coleman, executive director of the Downtown Jimmy Hale Mission, a Birmingham-based, no-cost transformation center for homeless men selected as the 2022 Best Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers in Birmingham.
Coleman, who took the reins of Jimmy Hale Mission in 2019, founded Mission from Hope Inspired Ministries in Montgomery and served as its executive director for eight years. The Greenville native served as a communications officer in the United States Army for 21 years before retiring from service in 2005. He was later the lead pastor at a church in Fort Deposit, Alabama, and director of benevolence for Compassion 21 in Montgomery before founding HIM.
For three-quarters of a century, the Jimmie Hale Mission has been helping men afflicted by homelessness in downtown Birmingham through education remediation, job readiness, and spiritual support. It runs an Active Recovery program, an in-depth, clinically structured Christian group approach to helping residents understand and overcome substance abuse.
“While we typically focus our programming on traditional business planning, we recognize the importance that non-profit organizations play in our community and want to do more to support them,” George said. “These individuals are business owners with a completely different set of rules and standard of operation, but they are just as important.”
